Tate & Lyle Process Technology was born out of Tate & Lyle Sugars’ Engineering and Research and Development expertise.
Tate & Lyle Process Technology (TLPT) is a business unit that was originally a part of Tate & Lyle Reasearch. In the 1970's it became a wholly owned corporation within the Tate and Lyle group of companies with the business objective of commercialising the Talofloc process which it had developed for refining cane sugar.
Today, the Talofloc process is a globally recognised part of cane sugar refining and is estimated to produce the majority of the world's refined sugar. TLPT has gone on to become a significant innovator of technology and during the late 1970's introduced the Talodura and Talofiltrate processes to enhance the operating efficiencies of cane sugar factories. In the 1980'S TLPT patented the Deep Bed Filter to provide a system of high flux filtration that improves the quality of liquor produced by the Talofloc clarification process. The DBF is now the established method of filtration in phosphatation refineries because it occupies a small footprint, has negligible operating costs and is supplied at a competitive capital cost. Moreover, it is still the only filter in the market that does not produce effluent or sweetwater and does not use any process consumables like filter aid.
Through the 1990's TLPT greatly increased its technical and engineering capabilities and continues to use these to meet the needs of its customers. TLPT has today created the capability to design and manage projects in cane mills and factories and to build complete cane sugar refineries and liquid sugar plants.
To sustain their Client's competitive edge TLPT uses its experience in manufacturing and processing in order to select and market speciality chemicals that enhance the performance of TLPT processes. TLPT has also developed analytical instruments to measure the operational performance of sugar factories and refineries. TLPT consultants use data produced by such analytical instruments as part of a technical audit to provide solutions to improve operational efficiencies of clients' operations.
Today, TLPT has installed technology into over 2000 projects in more than 130 countries. TLPT is located at the world renowned Thames Refinery in London, a port refinery serving the United Kingdom and overseas markets with cane sugar products.
In September 2010, American Sugar Holdings (ASH) bought Tate & Lyle's European sugar business which included Tate & Lyle Process Technology.
ASH now owns and operates ten cane sugar refineries in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Dominican Republic, UK and Portugal, with a combined annual production capacity of over 6,0 million tonnes of refined sugar. ASH is also engaged in sugar cane farming in Florida and the Dominican Republic and owns five raw sugar mills in the USA, Dominican Republic and Mexico that produce around 1,25 million tonnes of raw sugar per year.
TLPT today serves as a portal through which its Clients can access the capabilities and experience TLPT has developed throughout its history. Supplementary to this, TLPT Clients can gain access to the experience and capabilities within Tate & Lyle Sugars and the companies within American Sugar Holdings.
